New motor vehicle sales in New Zealand declined further in April but in line with the usual trend of a softer month for what is the start of the financial year for many, according to the Motor Industry Association (MIA).
At 9,238 registrations, April 2024 was 9.23% lower than April 2023. Year to date (YTD), 2024 was tracking 10.4% lower than 2023 at 43,166.

The top three overall market leaders in April 2024 were: Toyota with 25.8% market share, Ford with (13.7%) and Mitsubishi with (10.3%).
April registrations were light passenger 6,120, light commercial 2,521 and heavy commercial 597.
The top three segments in April were SUV medium (26.5%), pick up/chassis cab (22.6%) and SUV compact (19.6%).
Light passenger vehicles sales were 13.3% lower year on year and led by Toyota (27.2%), Kia (9.7%) and Mitsubishi (8.9%).
Top selling models in April were the Toyota RAV4, 1,012 units, Suzuki Swift (257) and Mitsubishi Outlander (245).
Commercial registrations of 3,118 were just 1 unit more than in April 2023. Year to date registrations were 10.2% higher.
Ford retained the lead with a 35.9% market share followed by Toyota (28.5%) and Mitsubishi (16.1%).
Top selling models were the Ford Ranger (837), Toyota HiLux (513), Mitsubishi Triton (405), Nissan Navara (174 ) and Toyota HiAce (162).
Heavy commercial registrations of 597 were 21.3% lower than April 2023 but YTD were 13.7% higher.
