General Motors is recalling nearly 200,000 of its Buick cars to equip them with new low beam headlamp bulbs, US federal safety regulators reportedly said on Thursday.

According to Reuters, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall – of 199,793 Buick Century and Regal sedans from the 1999 model year – was necessary because reduced illumination from their headlights could prevent drivers from reading overhead road signs when driving at night.


The news agency noted that GM has been hit with more recalls this year than in all of 2003. Standard & Poor’s auto analyst Scott Sprinzen reportedly cited the disproportionately high number of recalls in a conference call on Wednesday, saying it was one of the factors weighing on profits at the world’s largest automaker.
