Tata Motors has now built 1m cars (and counting) at its factory in Sanand, Gujarat.

The Sanand plant was established in 2010 on 1,100 acres, 741 for the car plant and 359 for a supplier park.

That followed a difficult period for the Indian automaker after violent protests in 2008 over the seizure of farm land halted work on a 95%-complete facility in Singur in West Bengal state. Singur was abandoned and the new site in Sanand secured.

Trial production of the INR100,000 (US$2,200) Nano began in January 2010 at the completed Sanand factory.

Now with 6,000 direct and indirect employees, the plant houses press line, weld shop, paint shop, assembly line and powertrain shop.

The Nano is a distant memory and the flexible assembly line today produces the Tiago and Tigor in multiple variations including CNG and EV powertrains plus the Xpres-T EV.
