The new version will be launched locally in November and exported to Argentina.

The brazilian-made X-TR will be essentially the same as the European model introduced in 2004. It has a bold black bumpers with fog lights, side bars and roof bars.

Citroën of Brazil said the local X-TR will not have increased suspension height compared with other locally-made C3 versions because they already ride 17mm higher than the European-made X-TR (and 47mm higher than other European C3 models).

In despite of its off-road looks, the X-TR will have on-road tyres and front-drive only.

The Brazil-spec X-TR will have a 1.6-litre 16-valve flex-fuel engine introduced last month in the Peugeot 206 range. The power output varies between 110hp and 113hp depending on the fuel used.

The new Citroën will enter the growing Brazilian “urban off-roader styled car” segment market that targets consumers who want a 4×4 SUV but can’t afford one.

Fiat began this trend in 1999 with the introduction of the Palio Adventure, an offroad-looking version of its Palio Weekend compact station wagon.

Fiat now also offers Adventure versions of the Strada pick-up and Doblò van. On its own the Doblò Adventure version takes a 60% of Doblò range sales while the Palio Adventure and the Strada Adventure account for about 35% of model line sales.

This year, Volkswagen introduced the Crossfox, based on the Fox five-door compact hatch, and General Motors launched a dealer-fitted ‘offroad’ styling kit for the Celta compact.

Peugeot is also considering an offroad-look version of the 206 SW wagon which would be unique to Brazil.
