The Associated Press said GM reiterated the figure, which it had announced before, after a newspaper reported the cuts would be lower.

AP said Klaus Franz, Opel’s top labour representative, was quoted by Financial Times Deutschland as saying Opel would only cut about 8,000 jobs.

Opel told the news agency a misunderstanding over shifting jobs to joint ventures partly contributed to the difference in figures – some 1,100 GM jobs out of the 9,500 will be moved to a joint parts distribution venture with Caterpillar and more will be outsourced to other joint ventures.
