In Taiwan, the Saveiro will be called the Pointer.

The automaker is shipping a first batch of 200 units. The Saveiro/Pointer is a pick-up based on the Gol compact hatchback and the version for Taiwan has a 1.8-litre eight-valve engine modified to run solely on petrol; in Brazil the engine runs on a petrol-25% alcohol blend.

Volkswagen of Brazil plans to export 700 Pointers to Taiwan by the end of the year – the country is the 22nd new market for Brazilian-made VW models in the last two years.

The Saveiro was first launched in Brazil in 1982 and is now in its third generation. In the first quarter of this year, the automaker exported 2,369 units to more than 20 countries.
