“No decision has been made, neither over production nor location,” a DaimlerChrysler spokesman told the news agency, adding that the [newspaper’s] report was “purely speculation”.
He reiterated to Reuters that a decision to build a new sports tourer model, aimed at rival BMW’s X3, would be made by the middle of the year.
Reuters said the Handelsblatt paper, quoting company sources, said in an article to be published on Tuesday that Bremen was close to being chosen because it was offering, among other things, to save the company about €100 million ($US130 million).
DaimlerChrysler’s plants in Berlin’s Ludwigsfelde and Brazil’s Juiz de Fora were also vying for the new model that should go on sale in 2008, the report said, according to Reuters.
