Between January and June the automaker sold 97,314 fully-assembled vehicles to foreign markets – an increase of 30.4% compared with the 74,642 units exported in the same period of 2003.

According to Volkswagen do Brasil, this resulted in a profit of about $US700 million.

In the first half of 2004, the main market for Brazilian-made Volkswagen vehicles was Mexico. The automaker shipped 42,936 vehicles and its Gol model is the best-selling car in the country.

Argentina and the United States were the next two biggest markets.

The Gol, uniquely made in Brazil, was VW’s top export in the first half of the year with 51,167 sold to more than 20 countries. The previous-generation Golf was the second most exported car at 14,042 units.

Volkswagen do Brasil announced the half year record one week after celebrating the export of 1.5 million vehicles.

It expects to export over 185,000 Brazilian-made vehicles in 2004.
