Toyota is close to building its seventh North American assembly factory in Woodstock, Ontario, in Canada, to produce small vehicles such as the Scion brand, the Asian Wall Street Journal said on Tuesday, according to a Reuters report.

A Toyota spokesman told Reuters no details had been decided, but added: “We realise we need new plants to expand our sales in the future.”


Citing Toyota executives, the paper reportedly also said Toyota planned to start making a hybrid version of the Camry sedan at a plant in Georgetown, Kentucky as early as 2006 as part of the company’s plan to shift production of hybrid vehicles to North America.


According to Reuters, the paper said Toyota is also considering producing the Prius or a hybrid version of the Corolla sedan at the New United Motor Manufacturing joint venture plant with General Motors in Fremont, California.
