DaimlerChrysler aims to avoid any forced layoffs while cutting about 600 jobs at its Smart minicar business by year’s end, the automaker reportedly said.
Under a deal reached with the works council, staff who lose their jobs at Smart will get priority for vacant posts elsewhere in the group or assistance finding work elsewhere, DC said in a statement cited by Reuters.
The cuts at loss-making Smart will reduce its workforce to around 760 from about 1,350 now – more than 100 jobs were already vacant, and jobs in group businesses are waiting for more than 200 others, the report said.
