BorgWarner has agreed a contract to provide its electric variable cam timing (eVCT) technology for use in an unnamed “major global OEM”’s four cylinder engine.

No financial or other details were provided.

The supplier claims its new eVCT will reduce emissions and improve fuel economy and performance.

It uses a standard VCT ability to phase the camshaft before and during starting the engine.

The new technology will reduce noise, vibration and harshness and also extend the phasing range of authority. This will result in improved CO2 reduction and a decreased time to torque of the engine.

The company’s eVCT technology incorporates a split ring planetary gearbox to provide an increased range of control when compared to hydraulic phasers.

It also lowers power consumption and can function at lower oil pressures and temperatures.

Production is set to commence in December 2024 at the company’s Ithaca, New York manufacturing facility.
