AFX reports that BMW is studying the possibility of entering the Indian market, management board member for sales and marketing Michael Ganal said in a prerelease of his interview with weekly Focus-Money’s Thursday edition.

He said the company has set up a team to develop a strategy on ways to enter the market, such as setting up a distribution company or entering into a partnership with other companies, according to the AFX report.


He also said the study also touches on whether the company has to set up a local production facility.


BMW, he said, would make its decision after the study is completed, which is expected in the next few months


The magazine said BMW currently sells its cars in India through three independent dealers.


It said from January to end-August this year, BMW sold 75 cars in India and the goal for the full year is 150 units, up 74 pct from 2003


The article also said BMW estimates the overall market for premium cars next year at around 2,500 units.
