NUMMI, in Fremont, California, will use some of the money by 2007 to upgrade a painting line, the report said, adding that an assembly line will also be renovated.

A Toyota spokeswoman told Reuters it is considering making improvements to the plant but nothing concrete has yet been decided.

The news agency said NUMMI, established in 1984, produces the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks and GM’s Pontiac Vibe and made 380,679 vehicles in 2004, including 311,453 Toyota-brand vehicles.

The newspaper reportedly said NUMMI’s production would rise to a record 410,000 vehicles this year but Toyota declined to confirm the figure.
