Toyota on Wednesday began to stand workers down because a strike at a Melbourne parts supply company has starved its production line, OptusNet News reported.

More than 1,000 workers at Toyota’s Altona factory, near Melbourne, had been stood down as production ground to a halt, the report added.
It said 3,000 more Toyota workers plus those at Ford’s car factory in Geelong face the same fate if workers at the parts supply company, Icon Automotive, do not return to work.
The report said the Icon workers walked off the job this week, worried they will lose their entitlements as the company goes into voluntary administration.
It is estimated the dispute will cost the car industry tens of millions of dollars in lost sales.
