Amtek Auto, one of India’s largest component manufacturing groups, has agreed a joint venture with Germany-based Neumayer Tekfor GmbH to manufacture high precision fractured piston connecting rod assemblies and modules in India.

The 50:50 joint venture will improve Amtek’s capabilities in the connecting rod business in India and abroad. Amtek is also one of India’s most aggressive automotive supplier groups and has a small presence in the UK and US, built through acquisitions.

Under the new joint venture, Amtek will use its low cost Indian base to manufacture connecting rods with technical collaboration by Neumayer Tekfor while the German company will use its global reach to market the components in Europe and America.

One of the JV’s main customers will be Maruti Udyog where the fractured connecting rod modules will be used in the Fiat-designed 1.2-litre multijet diesel engine which the company will start manufacturing from 2006. Amtek claims this will be the first time that an Indian company manufactures connecting rods with laser beam fracturing technology.

Neumaver Tekfor GmbH is part of the €380 million Tekfor group and employs 2,200 people. It has eight manufacturing facilities spread across Europe, USA & Brazil.
