Hyundai Engineering Company announced plans to expand its electric vehicle (EV) charging network in South Korea by installing equipment at public institutions, local government offices and private buildings, including apartment complexes, nationwide.

The Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) unit said it would receive subsidies from the Ministry of Environment to expand its network and would integrate its charging infrastructure into the design stage of new apartment complexes starting with Hillstate Apartments. It also planned to install charging equipment in parking lots at factories and other commercial facilities.

Hyundai Engineering entered the EV charging infrastructure business in 2020 when it took over HMG’s charging equipment unit. Last year it established an EV service team under its asset management division.

Sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in South Korea increased 29% to 448,934 units last year, according to registration data released by the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association. Sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) surged by 64% to 164,324 units while sales of hybrid vehicles, including plug-ins, amounted to 274,282 units, with the remainder hydrogen fuel cell EVs.

The best selling BEV model last year was the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (27,399 units) followed by the Kia EV6 (24,852) and Hyundai Ioniq 6 (11,289).
