In much the same way as Peugeot’s 206 and Renault’s Clio will continue on after ‘sucessors’ arrive, so it is with Fiat – the current Punto will live on after the new Grande Punto goes on sale in September.

The original has accounted for over six million sales over two generations since launch in 1993, and Fiat said the new Grande Punto’s objective is to regain leadership of the highly competitive and crucially important European compact hatchback market.

The Grande Punto is a larger vehicle than is typical for the class, to offer the highest possible safety standards, class leading quality, and the best range of diesel engines available in this category today, all at a very competitive price, its maker claims.

Three and five door body styles and four distinct versions will be offered at launch.

The new car was designed by Italdesign-Giugiaro, in partnership with Centro Stile Fiat. It’s 403cms long, 168cms wide and 149cms high on a 251cm wheelbase.

All engines meet Euro 4 emissions standards.

At launch there will be two petrol options: 1.2 8v (65bhp) and a new 1.4 8v with 77bhp; plus four turbodiesels: 1.3 16v MultiJet (75bhp), or 1.3 MultiJet with a variable geometry turbine (90bhp); and 1.9 MultiJet with either 120 bhp or 130 bhp.

New Punto could return Fiat cars to Australia
