GKN Driveline has developed new torque-sensing technology that eliminates traction problems experienced by some front-drive performance cars, while delivering excellent responsiveness and a sportier driving experience, it says.

GKN’s Super Limited Slip Differential (LSD) is being introduced on the Mini Cooper S, the first application of this torque-management technology. The option is available on models in the United States and in Europe.

With 161 bhp (brake horsepower) and performance to propel the front-drive hatchback from zero to 60 miles per hour in under eight seconds, the MINI Cooper S requires optimum traction to deliver driver-friendly performance, GKN says.

“The Super LSD is an innovative, compact and cost-effective solution for performance cars and can be fitted in place of open differentials in front- or rear-axle or transaxle applications,” says Graeme Walford, managing director of GKN Driveline’s Torque Technology Group.

“The technical sophistication of today’s cars is such that every refinement is vital,” Walford adds. “We are thrilled that a premium brand such as MINI recognizes that we have achieved a measurable advance in terms of driver-pleasing vehicle dynamics with our Super LSD.”
