Although the pictures come ahead of the Frankfurt show in September, the new vehicle won’t be seen in public until the Bologna show on December 1.

It will be produced by Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co., Ltd, from which 700,000 units of the current L200 have been exported world-wide since 1988.

Previewed during the 2005 Dakar Rally as “Truck Evolution”, the new L200 owes much of its design inspiration to the 2002 Pajero Evo 2+2 concept and the Pajero Evolution racer, with its nearly identical sharp lines, so-called “Mount Fuji” grille and firm stance.

Mitsubishi claims its designers approached the pickup concept with fresh eyes and turned the load bed into a bold styling feature, instead of a mere box, and gave the cabin the claimed largest interior room in the segment.

Like the current model, the new L200 will be available with single cab, club cab and four-door double cab body styles.

Permanent ‘Super Select’ four-wheel drive will be available along with active stability and traction control. The model rides on standard 17” wheels and has a claimed class-leading turning circle.

Engine options in Thailand include a 2.5-litre indirect turbodiesel developing 90PS/4,000rpm and 196Nm/2000 rpm; a 2.5-litre DI-D hyper common rail turbo (4D56 – 116 PS/4000 rpm and 247Nm/2000 rpm); a 2.5-liter DI-D hyper common rail turbo intercooler (4D56 – 140PS/4000 rpm and 321Nm/2000 rpm; and a 3.2-litre DI-D hyper common rail turbo intercooler (4M41 – 165PS/4000 rpm and 351Nm/2000 rpm.

European versions will have “a new and more powerful direct injection common rail Euro-4 compliant diesel engine”.

The latest L200 has a redesigned hydro-formed fully boxed frame and new independent front suspension and rear live axle set-up.
