Chinese auto joint venture SAIC General Motors Wuling (SGMW) began electric vehicle (EV) production in Indonesia this week with an event attended by the country’s coordinating minister for economic affairs Airlangga Hartarto.
Local subsidiary PT SAIC General Motors Wuling Motor Indonesia has a plant in Cikarang in West Java province with annual capacity for 120,000 vehicles per year. Last year it produced 25,300 vehicles, including the Confero MPV and the Cortez and Almaz SUVs.

The Cikarang plant now produces the Wuling Air EV, a battery powered microcar unveiled in Indonesia last June, based on the company‘s Global Small Electric Vehicle (GSEV) platform. It is the second EV model to be produced in the country after Hyundai Motor began production of the Ioniq 5 earlier this year.
The Air EV is fitted with a lithium iron phosphate battery powering a 40hp front mounted electric motor giving it a top speed of 62mph (100km/h). In China it is priced from CNY55,000 (US$8,140).
The company said it expected low prices will attract Indonesian buyers to the Air EV which has been designated the official vehicle for the G20 Summit in Bali later this year.
