The nominated ‘1 milionth’car is a UK-built Micra sold in Portugal, home to the automaker’s newest national sales company, which will be donated to Fundação do Gil, a non-government organisation dedicated to providing financial and humanitarian support to children undergoing long-term stays at hospitals, prisons or other similar institutions.
“This milestone marks our long and successful commitment to Europe and demonstrates our philosophy of contributing to the local communities in which we operate,” said Nissan Europe senior vice president Brian Carolin.
The Micra (called the March in Japan) is one of Nissan Europe’s most successful models – it was long the driving school car of choice here in the UK – and is also the highest-volume model produced at the automaker’s north-east England plan since production of the supermini line began there in 1992.
It was the first Japanese car to win “Car of the Year” in Europe in 1993 and more than a million of the second and third generation models have been sold in Europe since 1998.
To celebrate the milestone, Nissan has been running an advertising campaign called “Drive to 10 Million” offering special deals on its vehicles.
The automaker is conducting something of a product blitz in Europe this year, launching the Murano SUV, 350Z roadster, Pathfinder SUV, Navara Double Cab and King Cab pickup trucks and the Micra C+C coupe-cabriolet.
The 10 millionth campaign began in May and ends next month.
