UK-based GKN (maker of Constant Velocity Joints and torque management devices) says it has successfully developed and applied a new ‘sector leading’ third generation of technology for its “GI” tripod plunging joint product family. This joint type can be used on the gearbox side of sideshafts to smoothly transmit engine power and accommodate length and angle changes in sideshafts that are a result of steering and suspension movements, the company says.

The company claims that the new technology results in lighter weight and a more compact size than any other plunging joint on the market. “GI-3” technology provides increased torque ratings for comparable or smaller units than previous GKN or competitor products, it says.

The new technology has several claimed smart design details:

– Optimised tripod design
– Optimised roller and track dimensions
– Improved grease properties
– Optional – roller retention feature

For all vehicle segments, the application of the new “GI-3” offers a minimum of 8% reduction in package size and a related 9% reduction in weight, GKN says.

“The GI-3 technology has been a key product to solve customer vehicle packaging problems. It allows vehicle manufacturers to meet the packaging requirements of the restricted space in common vehicle platforms that have multiple powertrains”, said Al Deane, Engineering Director of GKN Driveline Driveshafts.

The new joint has already been industrialised for the Renault Master FWD diesel engine model. Further applications in Europe, Japan and USA have been scheduled for launch next year.
