New vehicle sales in Malaysia fell 3.6% to 56,213 units in April 2022 from 58,329 units in the same month of last year, according to registration data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

The association said shortages of semiconductors and shipment delays affected some vehicle manufacturers last month although overall vehicle production was 6.5% higher year on year at 54,734 units.

Economic growth accelerated to 5% in the first quarter of 2022 after growing 3.6% in the previous quarter.

Total sales in the first four months of the year were up 8% to 215,965 vehicles compared with 200,043 in the same period of last year, with passenger vehicle sales up 8% at 189,995 units while commercial vehicle sales rose 10% to 26,010 units.

Perodua saw its sales fall by over 4% to 25,654 units in April but was still up 11% at 87,278 units year to date, driven by popular models such as the Myvi, Axia and Bezza.

Proton reported a 41% drop in global sales to 8,839 units in April while year to date sales were down 26% at 35,545 units. Exports more than doubled to 1,573 units in the four month period, to markets such as Pakistan, Egypt and Brunei.
