Production of cars, trucks and buses in Japan in October fell 1.0% from a year earlier to 888,505 units for the first year-on-year decline in three months due mainly to sluggish domestic sales of passenger cars, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Tuesday.

However, auto exports in the reporting month rose 3.3% to 444,694 units, up for the third month in a row, the association said, according to Kyodo News.


In particular, vehicle exports to the United States surged 13.0% to 149,701 units for the ninth consecutive monthly increase. Sales of fuel-efficient small Japanese cars have been strong in the US market amid high petrol prices.


Output of passenger cars decreased 1.4% to 732,203 units, while that of trucks increased 0.2% to 149,772. Production of buses jumped 29.2% to 6,530 units.


Exports of passenger cars in October advanced 7.4% from a year earlier to 392,105 units, those of trucks declined 23.5% to 45,857 units, and those of buses moved up 24.9% to 6,732 units.


In value, exports of motor vehicles and auto parts in October came to $10.2 billion, up 10.3% from a year earlier, the association said, according to Kyodo’s report.
