Russia’s Moskvich may resume car production in two years, Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov said in an interview with the Russian channel TVTs. The company is controlled by the city government.

Moskvich stopped producing cars in 2002 due to lack of demand and a high level of debt. In 2001 Moskvich produced 810 cars, Prime-Tass reported.


At the present time part of the plant’s facilities are used by Avtoframos, a joint venture between the Moscow government and France’s Renault.


In the Soviet era Moskvich was the second biggest carmaker. It was created in 1930 as an affiliate of GAZ.
