Despite the loss of MG Rover, UK car production rose 0.3% to 149,662 in November, the best result for the month since 2000, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

Year to date production was off 2.4% to 1,500,414. Production for the UK market fell 10.5% to 393,784 while exports rose 0.9% to 1,106,630.


“Growth in export volumes should push the year end total to a record 1.19 million units. Almost eight in every 10 cars made in November went for export and year end market share for export should hit 74.1%,” the SMMT said.


“Export volumes continue to boost car production in the UK’, said SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan.


“Overall car output in 2005 should hit 1.6 million units, a little down on 2004 but still a strong performance.”


Year to date commercial vehicle production was down 0.6% to 193,195 units.


Home market production fell 3.7% to 73,223 while exports rose 1.3% to 119,972.
