After the success of the locally developed Scorpio UV the company is looking to boost its independent product development capability to take advantage of the steadily growing Indian passenger car market and healthy export opportunities.

The facility will carry out prototype development and testing and will also have an advanced test track.

The research and development centre is likely to be set up in the Mahindra World City – a large industrial park being developed by Mahindra and the state owned Tamil Nadu Industrial development Corporation (TIDCO) – about 30 miles (50km) from the city.

Mahindra & Mahindra is undergoing a large scale expansion of its product line. Over the next 2-3 years it will take its farm tractors into international markets, launch heavy commercial vehicles in collaboration with International Tractors and launch the Dacia Logan in India in collaboration with Renault.

With Mahindra Systems and Technologies, the company is making a strong foray into the components sector as well.
