Indonesia’s new vehicle market continued to rebound strongly in November 2021, by over 62% to 87,435 units, after plunging 41% to 53,834 units in the same month of last year, according to member wholesale data compiled by industry association Gaikindo.

In late August the Indonesian government began to ease some of the social and business restrictions it imposed at the beginning of July to slow the rapid spread of the covid Delta variant.

GDP growth slowed sharply in the third quarter as a result of the lockdowns, to 3.5% year on year, after rebounding by 7.1% in the second quarter.

Total vehicle sales in the first 11 months of 2021 rebounded by 67% to 790,524 units after falling by 50% to 474,910 units in the same period of last year, helped by record low interest rates and the suspension of the luxury tax on vehicles with engines up to 1,500cc until the end of the year. Smaller tax discounts are also available on larger vehicles with engines up to 2.5-litre.

Passenger vehicle sales surged 68% to 585,901 units year to date while commercial vehicle sales were up by 62% at 204,623 units.

Toyota reported a sales increase of 85% to 263,061 units year to date, with new models such as the Raize small crossover vehicle and the new Rush compact SUV helping to drive up volume.

Daihatsu sales were 77% higher at 149,113 units, lifted by the Rocky small crossover vehicle.

Mitsubishi sales increased by 93,347 units (+83%) in this period, followed by Suzuki with 82,021 units (+41%) and Honda’s 81,363 units (+24%).

In September Honda launched its second-generation BR-V, a 1.5-litre, seven seat compact MPV designed for Indonesia. The automaker hopes the vehicle’s new SUV-like appearance will help it compete more effectively with the Mitsubishi Xpander.

In November, China’s SAIC-GM-Wuling said it planned to launch a small electric vehicle in Indonesia next year, based on the purpose built GSEV platform which is used for its best selling Hongguang model.

The company said it had received positive feedback from the two GSEV-based models it displayed at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS 2021) earlier that month.
