DaimlerChrysler is a technology leader in the auto industry and supports fuel economy improvements across the board in light trucks — not just in the sport utility segment. At the end of the day, companies that balance fuel economy needs with customer demand will win in the marketplace.

The introduction of our new Chrysler PT Cruiser accomplishes both of those goals. It has certainly struck a passionate cord with consumers, while at the same time boosting light truck fuel economy another 2% over last year as part of our ongoing fuel economy effort.

Cost-effective improvements and advanced technology are also being incorporated in our products to keep pace with customer interest in fuel economy. One such technology is our recent demonstration of a hybrid electric version of the Dodge Durango. Application of hybrid technology could net a projected 20% improvement in Durango’s fuel economy, providing Congress passes a hybrid vehicle tax incentive being considered. We believe such long-term market-based initiatives are the real solution to concerns about truck fuel economy.
