September export production rose 18.3% year on year to 106,819 units and is up 7.2% to 835,096 year to date.
SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: “The increasing strength of the export market, driving UK production, is compensating for the slowdown in home output. This clearly demonstrates growing worldwide confidence in the UK as a competitive base to build new cars.”
In contrast, commercial vehicle production fell 13.7% year on year to 17,107 units, with export production declining 23% to 9,200.
Year to date production is down 2.3% to 136,123 with home market production up 8.1% to 62,420 and export production down 9.6% to 73,703.
“UK manufacturers are making solid ground from the buoyant home market despite the constraints of a weak export market. Full year output should remain close to 190,000 units,” Macgowan said.
