Bentley expects to have taken more than 200 orders for its Continental GT by the end of the year – some six months before the first deliveries start. The order book had topped 170 by the time the Tokyo Motor Show opened.

Meanwhile, Ulrich Bez, head of Aston Martin, said that 5% of all production was being sold in Japan. That means around 50 cars this year. As Aston Martin increases production to a mid-term target of 2000 cars, Bez said he was confident that Japan would continue to take its full share, or around 100 cars.

At Rolls-Royce, where the new Phantom had just made its Japanese debut, it was a similar story. Traditionally, Asia takes 20% of all Rolls-Royce production, with one-fifth of that sold in Japan. That means about 50 Rollers a year, and the first few orders had already been confirmed as the Tokyo show opened.
