New vehicle sales in Malaysia continued to fall in September 2021, by over 23% to 44,275 units from 57,758 units in the same month of last year, according to registration data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
Economic activity began to recover last month after the government continued to ease business and social restrictions put in place at the beginning of June to help control surging cases of the COVID-19 Delta variant. Compared with extremely depressed levels in August, the vehicle market last month was up by 153%, helped by the current sales tax exemption which has been extended until the end of the year.

In the first nine months of the year new vehicle registrations were down by over 7% at 318,874 units, from 344,019 units in the same period of last year, with passenger vehicles sales down by almost 9% at 282,992 while commercial vehicles were up by 14% at 35,882 units.
Overall vehicle production in the country fell by close to 12% to 45,972 units in September, with the ongoing global chip shortage impacting some manufacturers, and was down by close to 4% at 303,996 units in the first nine months of the year.
Proton confirmed its sales in September fell by 13% to 10,380 and were down just slightly at 73,017 units year to date.
Perodua sales plunged by 43% to 14,160 vehicles last month from peak year earlier levels, while cumulative nine month volume was down by almost 18% at 119,093 units.
