The report said sales fell to 184,706 units in October from 188,209 cars in the same month last year as high unemployment has stalled consumer spending in France, the euro zone’s second-biggest economy.

France’s biggest car maker, PSA Peugeot Citroen, posted a 9.8% drop in new car sales in the month, to 59,439 units, but domestic rival Renault’s sales rose 10.9% to 52,583 units, Reuters said.

Sales by foreign car makers, which, Reuters noted, have been gaining market share from Peugeot and Renault, fell 2.9% last month to 72,677 cars, though several Asian manufacturers continued to make gains.

French sales also fell for German car maker DaimlerChrysler, Italy’s Fiat SpA and US-based manufacturers Ford and General Motors, the Reuters report said.
