Fiat sold 18,362 of the Punto, updated in late summer, and 8,032 of the Panda, a subcompact that is new in all but name and hit dealerships in late September, the report said.

The next most popular models were the Citroen C3 and Toyota Yaris [Vitz/Echo], each with around 6,300 units sold, Dow Jones said.

Dow Jones noted that, though car sales in Italy in October declined 0.3% from the year before, Fiat lifted its market share to 29.6% from 28.6%.

Fiat’s Stilo, launched in September 2001, and the new Lancia Ypsilon, launched in June, both sold more than 5,000 units in October and qualified for Italy’s top 10 list, according to Unrae’s data, Dow Jones said, noting that the Stilo was also the third-best seller in Italy’s growing diesel category in October, following Ford’s Focus and the Punto.

On Tuesday, Fiat unveiled its latest new model, the Alfa Romeo GT, which will reach dealers in December and sell for between €26,000 and €42,000, Dow Jones said.
