UK-based automotive market research company JATO says that Europe’s best-selling car is still the Peugeot 206, with fellow French supermini, the Renault Clio, taking second place in October thanks to strong sales in France, the UK and Italy.

JATO also says that year-to-date the number two spot is still occupied by Volkswagen’s Golf, but the Golf (lower-medium) segment is still in notable decline, with only the premium quality and larger products resisting the downward trend.
The market research company also said that the year-to-date West European market is still ‘just 1.65% down, showing robustness in a difficult economic climate and intensely competitive conditions’.
JATO also says that full-size MPVs are faring well, possibly as a result of buyers moving from executive cars to vehicles with the same footprint but more interior space and greater flexibility. JATO says that higher sales of these vehicles may reflect the increasing trend, especially in the UK market, to offer employees cash in lieu of a company vehicle. This may also be encouraging buyers into the less status-conscious choice of an MPV – Peugeot’s 807 and Chrysler’s Voyager are both enjoying particularly strong sales in the UK.
