Mitsubishi Motors signed a preliminary agreement with Hitachi Transport System to study the viability of using electric vehicles (EVs) to deliver goods commercially in Thailand.

The agreement was signed between Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) and Hitachi Transport System’s Thai unit, Eternity Grand Logistics.

A Mitsubishi Minicab MiEV small battery powered van will be used for the 12 month project which will involve collecting data such as travel distances, power charge logs and delivery routes to help establish an optimum operating environment for commercial EVs in the country.

Mitsubishi Motors said it had already supplied around 9,000 Minicab MiEVs to numerous logistics companies, retailers and local governments in Japan.

Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) CEO Eiichi Koito said in a statement: “We will continue to explore the viability of electrification in tandem with the proliferation of charging stations and support from the Thai government.”

Eternity Grand Logistics chairman Ryuichi Honda added: “As one of the leading players in the logistics industry, we have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. We are proud to be partnering with one of the leading automotive companies for this green initiative.”
