Hyundai Motor announced plans to halt production at one of its domestic plants for four weeks to prepare for the introduction of a new electric vehicle model.

A spokesman for South Korea’s top automaker confirmed production at the Asan plant would be suspended from 13 July to 6 August to upgrade manufacturing equipment to build the Ioniq 6 midsize sedan later this year.

This will be the second model to be based on Hyundai’s electric-global modular platform (E-GMP), following the launch of the Ioniq 5 earlier this year.

Hyundai plans to launch the Ioniq 6 worldwide from early next year, to be followed by the Ioniq 7 large SUV EV in 2024.

The Asan plant, 100km south of Seoul, has annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles per year and currently produces the Sonata midsize sedan and Santa Fe SUV.
