UK’s Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott announced (20/7/00) that the UK Government is to spend £180 billion in resolving UK transportation problems with £56 billion coming from the private sector, reports the UK`s Daily Telegraph (21/7/00).

The 10-year plan includes £60 billion to be spent on the railways, £59 billion for roads and around £26 billion for local transport schemes. £20 billion of the new investment is to be earmarked for transport schemes for London.

The plans were welcomed by business leaders and motoring organisations within the UK although environmental campaigners described the schemes as an alarming increase in road building.
