Turkey’s automotive industry enjoyed a record year in 2010, according to local media reports.

The country’s Vatan newspaper said sales reached 750,000 units in 2010, against 557,126 in 2009. The report said the sector had benefitted from a recovering global economy and lower interest rates.

Citing Ibrahim Aybar, head of Renault Mais, the newspaper said in December alone, sales rose to between 140,000 and 150,000 vehicles.

In November last year, Ford said its vehicle sales in the country had increased significantly in October, highlighting improving customer confidence. The company’s sales in Turkey rose by 44% compared to October 2009, the US manufacturer said.
