“If we don’t organise the transnationals, I don’t think there is a long-term future for the UAW,” King is quoted as saying, citing Toyota, Nissan and Honda that “don’t fear us.”
UAW membership is apparently declining and now represents around 400,000 current employees and 600,000 retired workers.
The UAW is present at Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, but does not have a major presence elsewhere.
“We want to be on the cutting edge of labour relations,” King is also quoted as saying. “That is the opportunity for all these companies.”
