The Toyota group – including Daihatsu and Hino – delivered 8,418,000 vehicles worldwide last year, ahead of General Motors’ 8,389,769 units.

Toyota sold 2,204,000 vehicles in Japan and 6,214,000 overseas. Toyota Motor Corporation alone accounted for 1,566,000 in Japan and 5,962,000 overseas – 7,528,000 in total.

GM’s deliveries were up 12.2% on the 2009 tally of 7,477,178.

It said it achieved double-digit increases in five of its top 10 markets, including a 28.8% jump in China, where GM and its partners were the first to top the 2m sales mark in a single year, and an increase of 41.3% in Uzbekistan, which now GM’s 10th-largest market by volume and home to a local assembly unit.

Deliveries in the US, GM’s second largest market, rose 6.3% despite the phase-out or sale of four brands, while Brazil, GM’s third-largest market, saw deliveries rise by 10.4%.
