A series of strikes and rallies is taking place around Italy today (28 January) following Fiat union FIOM’s call for a series of eight hour nationwide walkouts.
The union, which has consistently opposed new productivity proposals by the Italian automaker, says it achieved an 80% turnout at Mirafiori, scene of a bitter dispute involving new working practices.

Many other plants are also on strike according to FIOM, such as Fiat Auto Cassino, Melfi, Piedmont and Terni.
“Taking place throughout Italy the general strike of metalworkers – eight hours per shift – has today [been] called [by] the FIOM-CGIL,” said a union statement.
“There are currently 18 regional events and four provincial events.”
