The Figo was the big success with sales of more than 8,600 units in January. The company’s previously best-selling month was March 2010 with 9,478 vehicles.

Michael Boneham, president and managing director of Ford India, said the record-breaking monthly sales are a signal of more great things to come from the company in 2011.

“2010 was a landmark year for us, with Ford nearly tripling its annual sales volume. Now we’ve begun 2011 with record-setting January sales. We have carried the momentum of last year’s terrific performance into the new year by crossing the 10,000-unit sales mark.

“We are constantly fine-tuning our performance for maximum growth, and this is just the beginning of what I anticipate will be an incredible year for the company.”

Last year, Ford India sold 83,887 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of more than 184%. The growth has been largely driven by the popularity of the award-winning Figo, more than 68,000 units have been sold since its launch in March last year.

Yesterday market leader Maruti Suzuki reported that it recorded its highest ever sales in a quarter. Domestic sales volume grew by 36.8% to 299,527 units, led by Alto, Wagon R and Swift. The company registered its highest-ever sales in India with 107,555 units in October 2010. In November, domestic sales reached 102,503.

Tata Motors’ sales, including exports of commercial and passenger vehicles in January 2011 were 75,423 vehicles, a growth of 15% over 65,478 vehicles sold in January 2010.

Domestic sales of Tata commercial and passenger vehicles for the month were 70,475, 13% growth over 62,202 sold in January last year.

Sales of the Tata Nano were 68% higher than January last year at 6,703.
