GM has confirmed it has suspended building vehicles at its 6 October plant near Cairo as massive political turmoil batters Egypt.
The US automaker has a regional team in place that is currently evaluating when to restart operations that have been halted as huge protests continue to paralyse the Egyptian capital.

“All of our employees in Egypt as well as our plant property is safe and secure,” GM told just-auto in an emailed statement from its international operations in China.
“Our local team in Cairo is assessing the situation and will decide to commence normal operations once the conditions permit. We are currently not building vehicles.”
A massive demonstration of around 1m protesters, hostile to the regime of President Hosni Mubarak, has been called by the anti-government opposition today (1 February) in Cairo, leading many international companies to mount emergency evacuation plans for expatriate employees.
Daimler and Nissan are thought to be other automakers that have temporarily suspended operations.
