Blog: Dave LeggettSay what you mean

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld this week won a 'foot in mouth' award from the British Plain English Campaign for the below remarks delivered at a press conference earlier this year:

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don't know we don't know."

But some press releases I receive are a bit baffling too. Or the prose is a bit too flowery. Someone at Lancia got a bit carried away here. Maybe the Barolo was really flowing at lunchtime:

Four Ypsilon 'unique edition' versions are lined up for your delectation on the sophisticated and elegant Lancia catwalk. These cars, dedicated to natural elements (Fire, Air, Earth and Water), feature a brand new two-tone body and interiors of enormous prestige and quality. These veritable gems of style and engineering will team up with famous personality couples to star in a special event at the Bologna Motor Show.

All spotlights are on the Ypsilon Fuoco (Fire) displayed on a rotating stand. This regal car is surrounded by its three maids of honour (Aria, Acqua and Terra [Air, Water and Earth]). The new 1.3 16v Multijet engine is also on show in a nearby glass showcase. This power unit is also fitted to the fifth pocket range leader present at Bologna: the Platino version combined with a sophisticated D.FN System robotised gearbox.

Not far away, visitors can also stand and stare into the windows of the Lancia boutique as though they were in an exclusive street of Rome or Milan. Here you can see curious and unusual items belonging to the Sins and Virtues collection together with some top quality luxury items. This is another completely new way of taking visitors into the extraordinary universe of the Lancia Ypsilon, born under the sign of exclusivity where sin is satisfaction. You will find it impossible to resist.
