Blog: Dave LeggettMondeo Man an endangered species?

The decline of the upper medium D-segment in the European market is well documented. It has been squeezed from above (why have a Mondeo if you can afford a BMW 3 Series?) and from below (by compact MPVs like the Renault Scenic based on C-segment platforms but offering high utility). How does Ford make Mondeo work if volume is lower? The answer is a combination of flexible capacity and scale economies from shared architecture and engineering. This article is good and includes some interesting historical numbers that illustrate the Mondeo volume decline. But how low in volume terms can Mondeo go? If the new car is good, I would be surprised if Mondeo volumes didn't perk up a bit.
