There are some reasons why it will take time for diesels to break into the light duty sector in the US (image being one of them), but a few European manufacturers are dipping their toes in (Mercedes with BlueTec, BMW and Volkswagen also). When I asked Fredrik Arp of Volvo about Volvo's plans, there was a fairly no-nonsense and short reply which made me think that something is perhaps in the pipeline (read the full interview here). The way Volvo is performing in the US right now, it's almost a case of what's to lose?

Could the timing be right for diesel with gas prices where they are?
