USA: Volkswagen extends warranties to cover faulty window parts

By just-auto.com editorial team | 6 November 2002

Volkswagen of America is giving 850,000 US customers a special extended warranty to cover window parts that could fail on some models

Volkswagen insisted that this was not a recall but a "targeted warranty extension that addresses customer concerns" regarding the durability of window clamps on some cars.

If this clamp malfunctions, it prevents the window from being raised or lowered so Volkswagen has designed and produced a more durable replacement part.

The extended warranty affects 1998-2002 New Beetles and 1999-2002 Golfs, GTIs and Jettas.  The new clamp and the work to install it will be covered free of charge under the warranty.

The new part is used in 2003 VW models which are not affected by the warranty extension.

There was no word from VW on whether the extended warranty programme or the window clamp modifications would apply in markets outside the US.

However, driver's door window operation problems have occurred intermittently on a Bora - the German-built equivalent of the Mexican-made US Jetta - run by a just-auto staffer.
