MG Rover is set to reduce the number of platforms from five to three as part of a restructuring programme, writes the UK's Financial Times (13/9/00).

According to the report, Rover Chief Executive Kevin Howe said Tuesday (12/9/00) that Rover is to focus on one sports-car platform, a new medium-sized platform - possibly to be developed in partnership with another car manufacturer - and the production of a large car based on the Rover 75 model.

The company is to replace both its Rover 25 and 45 small and medium-sized models with a single platform, which was the subject of a confidentiality agreement with another auto-maker, says the report.
