By Graeme Roberts | 10 February 2020

New vehicle sales in Australia in January 2020 reached 71,731, down 12.5% year on year - 20,494 passenger vehicles (-26.9%), 35,393 SUVs (-1.5%) and 14,035 LCVs (-11.2%), according to the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

Top selling models were the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger and Toyota Corolla, respectively.

FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said: "Given the broad range of environmental, financial, international and political issues facing Australia during January, it is no surprise to see the new vehicle market has reported a conservative start to the year."

Toyota was market leader in January with 14,809 sales and 20.6% share. Mazda booked 6,695 sales (9.3%), followed by Hyundai (5,443, 7.6%), Mitsubishi (5,108, 7.1%) and Kia (4,705, 6.6%).

The Hilux sold 2,968 units closely followed by the Ranger's 2,624 sales. Toyota Corolla volume was 2,370 followed by the RAV4 (2,290) and Mitsubishi Triton pickup (2,075).

January 2020 had one less selling day than January 2019.
